In 2011 we had an idea. We indulged divine proportion and called this idea root5.
Simply 95% of everything is mediocre. We wanted to celebrate the other 5%. To create a space for designers and artists challenging the ordinary, making innovative, playful and maverick work.
It became reality with small steps onto the East London art scene, launching our collective at East Pops and Red Gallery.
In 2012, we popped. Up. A Design Store. In the heart of Clerkenwell, right where we first had this idea. 15 designers and artists that represented generations of students and graduates from among others Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, showcasing new and old work for Christmas.
Jewellery, Prints, Cards, Fashion, Badges many other curiosities left with new and old friends, carefully wrapped, ribboned, stamped and sealed with a neon dot.
In 2013, we were overcome by love. Seasonally adjusted design love. We launched our our Web-Shop, with an edit of limited edition design products, jewellery and badges.
The idea grows. Exhibition. Pop-Up Shop. Website. Facebook. Twitter. Web-Shop. This is the next step. Our Blog.
It's been a long year, with some exciting events for our designers, which meant a little break from Root5. Next year we will be back, with more geometry, colour and innovative design.
Our yearly opening of the HQ, our Christmas Open Studios will begin Thursday 4th December, continuing through the weekend. Come and visit us for new jewellery and pieces from previous collections by Sian Evans and Jenny Parker of Root5 history, and friends FESWA and Charlotte Emily Fisher. There will be some Root5 archive too, and 3 new Christmas card designs for 2014.
Imagine you had a large handful of brightly coloured straws to play with. All those potential structures, shapes, figures you could make. Sound like an ideal sunday afternoon? This is just one of the experiences at Sensing Spaces: Architecture Reimagined is Spring's blockbuster exhibition at the Royal Academy (thanks to Diébédo Francis Kéré).
Inviting 7 architecture practices to inhabit those historic galleries, and in one case giving you the opportunity to get right up inside vaulted ceiling and mouldings of that very architecture (Pezo von Ellrichshausen), the website promises us to ask the questions 'how do spaces make us feel?' and 'what does architecture do for our lives?'.
There was a trade show. But then there was Munich. And we are going to stand up and say it, we go back again and again for the design. Galleries, Museums, Manufactum; Cafe Puck, Catra Pura, Suckful. Sometimes we need reminding of the pure loveliness of beautifully designed shops, buildings, stationery, and kitchenware (with a side of Bavarian beer)!
David David is meticulously covering the world in it's patterned vision. Root5 is thrilled to have some of these pieces in our newly launched web shop and we wanted to know a little more about what goes on behind the scenes... I talk to David Saunders about the rise and rise of his perfect geometry. Saunders is incredibly passionate about his work and his attitude leaves me with the impression that this is a label in it for the long haul which will keep on growing until it’s a household name. As a business the two brothers fight their corners between realism and imagination and the results are beautifully balanced and exciting.
The Winter Web-Shop is live, with Jewellery, Accessories, Prints, Scarves, Badges and above all design that we have chosen because we really like it. We hope you do too.
To celebrate and offer the opportunity to see and try all these lovely things we are hosting a 3-day Christmas Shopping Event at our studio: Top Floor, 111-113 St John Street, Clerkenwell, London EC1V 4JA on 12th/13th/14th December. We hope you can join us!
It's really exciting to have a selection of Fabric Lenny's prints here for the Root5 Winter Edition. A part of our journey, Fabric Lenny took part in our 2012 Christmas Pop-Up . His distinctive prints and live projection drawing had us all mesmerised.
The few words on his colourful and interactive website state 'I love Colour, Cardboard , Collaborating and live projection! For me everything starts with drawing, it's a way for me to propagate ideas, clarify thinking and make discoveries.'
